This method encourages a deep, robust root system, making the plant more resilient to heat stress.
The goal is to deliver enough water to penetrate six to eight inches deep into the soil, typically equating to about one to one-and-a-half gallons per session for mature plants. Direct watering to the soil at the base of the plant, using a soaker hose or drip irrigation system, ensures moisture reaches the roots directly. Avoiding contact with the foliage prevents water from sitting on the leaves overnight, which can create a favorable environment for fungal diseases.
The best time to water is early morning, ideally between 5 AM and 8 AM, before the sun reaches its peak intensity. Watering at this time minimizes water loss due to evaporation and ensures the plant is fully hydrated before the heat of the day. This morning schedule also allows any accidental moisture on the leaves to dry quickly, reducing the risk of disease development.
Adjusting Watering Based on Environment and Location
The standard watering schedule must be flexible and adjusted based on environmental conditions and the plant’s location. During periods of extreme heat or drought, the frequency of deep watering may need to increase significantly, potentially moving to every other day or even daily. Soil composition plays a large role in how quickly water is retained or drains away. This wilting is distinguishable because the surrounding soil remains wet or soggy, and the leaves may feel soft or mushy, rather than dry.
Over-watering often leads to chlorosis, causing leaves to turn yellow, sometimes with the veins remaining green, as waterlogged roots struggle to absorb nutrients.
