Stoma paste is a specialized product designed to enhance the seal of an ostomy appliance. It functions as a caulk-like filler, smoothing out uneven skin surfaces around the stoma, such as creases, folds, or scars. This creates a more level area for the ostomy barrier or wafer to adhere to. The primary purpose of stoma paste is to minimize the potential for leaks by filling these gaps, thereby protecting the skin from irritation caused by ostomy output and potentially extending the wear time of the appliance. Stoma paste does not act as an adhesive itself, but rather as a protective filler that supports the appliance’s secure fit.
Preparation Before Application
Proper skin preparation around the stoma is important for effective adhesion and skin health. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the skin using warm water and a washcloth. If choosing to use soap, select a mild, oil-free, and fragrance-free option to prevent residue that could interfere with adhesion. After cleansing, the skin must be completely dry, as any moisture can compromise the seal. Gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel or gauze, or use a hairdryer on a cool setting.
During this preparation stage, it is helpful to inspect the skin around the stoma for any signs of irritation, redness, or damage. Addressing these issues before applying new products helps maintain skin integrity. If hair is present in the application area, it should be trimmed or shaved to ensure the barrier adheres directly to the skin, avoiding interference with the seal.
Applying Stoma Paste
Applying stoma paste involves careful placement to create a smooth surface for the ostomy appliance. It can be applied directly to the skin around the stoma or to the back of the wafer/skin barrier. Warming the paste before use improves its pliability and makes it easier to spread. This can be achieved by holding the tube in your hands or running it under warm water.
Use a small amount, typically a thin bead or pea-sized amount, to fill any gaps or uneven areas; over-application reduces its effectiveness and creates unnecessary mess. If applying to the skin, focus on filling creases, folds, or scars. If applying to the wafer, dispense a thin bead around the inner edge of the opening. Use a moistened finger or specialized tool to gently smooth and mold the paste, ensuring it forms a level surface. Allow the paste to set for a minute or two before attaching the ostomy appliance; this helps it fill contours and establish a secure seal.
Ensuring Proper Adhesion and Removal
After applying stoma paste and placing the ostomy appliance, ensure proper adhesion is important for a secure seal. Gently apply firm, even pressure over the entire skin barrier, especially around the stoma, to help distribute the paste and ensure full contact with the skin. Applying gentle heat, such as from a heating pad or hairdryer on a low setting, can further enhance the bond between the wafer and skin after application. This helps the adhesive conform to body contours.
Stoma paste is changed with each appliance change. When removing the appliance, support the skin with one hand and gently peel the skin barrier away. Remaining paste residue can often be removed with warm water and a soft cloth, or with adhesive remover wipes or sprays for stubborn residue. It is not necessary to remove every trace of paste; aggressive scrubbing can irritate the skin. Leaving a small amount of clean residue is preferable to causing skin trauma.
