How to Use Pre-Seed Fertility Lubricant Correctly

Pre-Seed is a fertility-friendly lubricant designed to mimic the consistency and chemical balance of natural cervical mucus. It comes with internal applicators and can also be applied externally, and getting the technique right makes a real difference in both comfort and effectiveness. Here’s how to use it for the best results.

Why Pre-Seed Is Different From Regular Lubricant

Most personal lubricants damage sperm. In lab testing published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, Pre-Seed maintained over 85% progressive sperm motility, significantly outperforming every other lubricant tested, including KY Jelly, which is known to be harmful to sperm. The difference comes down to chemistry: Pre-Seed is formulated with salt and pH buffers that keep its acidity and salt concentration close to what sperm encounter naturally in cervical fluid.

The FDA classifies fertility-friendly lubricants as Class 2 medical devices under obstetrics and gynecology, meaning they go through a formal clearance process. This isn’t a marketing label. Pre-Seed had to demonstrate that its formulation doesn’t impair sperm function to earn that designation.

How to Use the Internal Applicator

Each Pre-Seed kit includes a tube of lubricant and several thin, single-use applicators. To use one internally:

  • Attach the applicator. Twist it onto the tube’s nozzle, then gently squeeze the tube to fill the applicator to your desired amount. The applicator has measurement markings along the side.
  • Insert and apply. Lie down or find a comfortable position, then insert the applicator vaginally, similar to a tampon. Press the plunger slowly to release the lubricant.
  • Time it right. Apply about 15 minutes before intercourse. This gives the lubricant time to spread and coat the vaginal canal evenly, creating an environment that’s ready for sperm.

One important tip that comes up repeatedly among users: the suggested amount on the packaging is too much for most people. The full recommended dose (around 2 to 3 grams) can make things feel overly slippery to the point where sensation is reduced for both partners. Most couples find that 0.5 to 1.5 grams is plenty. Start with half a gram your first time and adjust from there.

Using Pre-Seed Externally

You don’t have to use the internal applicator every time. Pre-Seed works fine applied externally, either on yourself around the vaginal opening or on your partner. Applied this way, it functions like any other lubricant during foreplay and intercourse, with the advantage of not harming sperm once it makes its way inside.

External application is especially practical for unplanned or spontaneous sex when you haven’t had 15 minutes to prepare with the applicator. A generous amount applied near the vaginal entrance will naturally work its way inward during intercourse. Some couples alternate between methods depending on the situation, using the applicator when they know sex is coming and applying externally when things happen more spontaneously.

When to Apply During Your Cycle

Pre-Seed is most useful during your fertile window, typically the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. This is the stretch of your cycle when conception is possible, and it’s also when your body would normally produce its own cervical mucus to help sperm survive.

Some people produce enough natural lubrication during this window and don’t need any product at all. Pre-Seed fills a gap for those who experience vaginal dryness, whether from stress, medications like antihistamines or certain fertility drugs, or simply from individual variation. If you’re already well-lubricated, adding Pre-Seed won’t improve your chances of conceiving. It’s a substitute for missing cervical mucus, not a fertility booster.

What Pre-Seed Won’t Do

Pre-Seed protects sperm from the damage that regular lubricants cause, but it doesn’t increase fertility beyond that. It won’t help sperm swim faster, improve egg quality, or address underlying causes of infertility like hormonal imbalances or blocked tubes. Think of it as removing a potential obstacle rather than adding an advantage.

It’s also not a spermicide alternative. Pre-Seed is designed to keep sperm alive, so it offers no contraceptive protection whatsoever. If you’re not trying to conceive, this is not the lubricant to reach for.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store Pre-Seed at room temperature and check the expiration date on the packaging before use. The preservative system keeps the product stable and free from bacterial contamination, but like any medical product, it loses effectiveness past its printed date. Each applicator is single-use. Don’t try to reuse or refill them, as this introduces bacteria and compromises sterility.
