Too much sand drains quickly, leading to drought stress, whereas heavy clay compacts easily, restricting root growth.
Specialized lawn blends often contain washed sand combined with loam or organic material. Organic matter, such as fine compost, significantly increases the soil’s capacity to hold water and nutrients because it acts like a sponge. A healthy lawn soil should aim for an organic content of about 3 to 5 percent, which also improves soil structure and microbial activity.
Before selection, ensure the material is screened to remove large debris, rocks, and potential weed seeds. Most turfgrasses thrive in a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (6.0 to 7.0). Soil can also be used to fill minor depressions and level the surface, preventing scalping when mowing. For small, bare patches, soil provides a fertile base layer for new seed to germinate. When establishing a new lawn, a substantial layer of quality soil is spread across the entire area to ensure a rich, deep foundation.
The best time for application is during the grass’s peak growth period, such as late spring or early fall. Active growth ensures the grass can quickly push through the new layer and recover. Applying soil during hot summer months or cold winter dormancy can stress the grass, increasing the risk of smothering.
Step-by-Step Application Techniques
Surface preparation ensures the existing lawn is ready to receive the new material. Mow the grass at the lowest acceptable height and remove all clippings; this exposes the soil surface and allows direct contact.
