Himalayan salt is a type of rock salt mined from the Punjab region of Pakistan. Its distinctive pink hue comes from trace amounts of various minerals, particularly iron oxide. Chemically, this salt is remarkably similar to common table salt, consisting of approximately 95 to 98% sodium chloride. Recent popularity has led to claims that it can support weight loss efforts. The primary method for utilizing Himalayan salt is preparing a saturated solution known as “sole water.” Preparation begins by filling a glass jar about one-quarter full with Himalayan salt, using either coarse ground salt or small chunks. Filtered or distilled water is then poured into the jar until it is nearly full.

The jar must be sealed with a plastic or non-metal lid, as the high salt concentration can corrode metal. The jar is gently shaken and allowed to sit at room temperature for 24 hours to ensure the salt dissolves completely and reaches saturation.

The sole is ready when undissolved salt crystals remain at the bottom of the jar, confirming the water is fully saturated. If all the salt dissolves, more salt must be added, and the solution allowed to sit overnight again.

To consume, one teaspoon of the concentrated sole is diluted into a full glass of plain water. This mixture is often recommended to be consumed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The concentrated sole can be stored indefinitely at room temperature, and more water and salt can be added as the solution is used.

Scientific Reality and Sodium Limits

Current scientific evidence does not support the idea that Himalayan salt directly causes fat loss or significantly boosts metabolism. The salt’s composition is overwhelmingly sodium chloride, meaning its effects are virtually identical to those of any other dietary salt. The trace minerals that give it its pink color are present in such low concentrations that they offer no measurable nutritional advantage or therapeutic effect on metabolic function.

Focusing on any type of salt for weight loss, including sole water, introduces the risk of excessive sodium intake. The daily recommended limit for sodium consumption is approximately 2,300 milligrams for healthy adults. Intentionally increasing salt intake through sole water can push a person past this limit, potentially leading to health concerns.

Excessive sodium encourages the body to retain water, which can cause temporary bloating and may increase blood volume.
