The battery must then be placed into the hearing aid’s compartment with the correct orientation, typically positive side up, to ensure electrical contact. Rechargeable hearing aids depend on their charging case for power management. Place the aids securely into their charging wells, often indicated by a color match for left and right ears, and observe the indicator lights. A pulsing light shows the aid is currently charging, while a solid light confirms it has reached a full charge and is ready for use.
Activating the Hearing Aid
Once the power source is prepared, the method for turning the hearing aid on depends on its design. For many devices using disposable batteries, closing the battery door fully serves as the on-switch mechanism. When the door is clicked shut, it holds the battery in place and establishes the electrical connection, initiating the start-up sequence. This design prevents the hearing aid from accidentally turning on during battery changes.
Certain models, particularly some behind-the-ear or rechargeable aids, feature a dedicated push-button or rocker switch for activation. To turn these devices on, press and hold the button for a few seconds until an indicator confirms the action. The hearing aid will then begin its boot-up process, which usually takes about three to five seconds. Successful activation is often signaled by a short melody, a quick series of beeps, or a momentary flash of an indicator light.
What to Do If It Doesn’t Turn On
If your hearing aid fails to activate, a simple check of the power source is the first step. For disposable batteries, ensure the protective tab was completely removed and that you allowed the battery to air up for the recommended minute. Open the battery door and re-confirm the battery’s polarity, making sure the positive and negative ends are aligned as indicated. If using a rechargeable device, verify the aid was correctly seated in the charger and that the charging light was solid green, confirming a full charge.
Inspect the battery contacts and charging ports for any visible moisture or debris that might be blocking the electrical current. Dust or wax can sometimes prevent the required connection. Check the volume or program settings, as a functioning hearing aid may simply be set to an extremely low volume, giving the false impression that it is powered off.
