How to Tell the Age of a Snapping Turtle?

Snapping turtles, including the Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) and the Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), are reptiles known for their long lifespans. Determining their precise age is challenging, especially in wild populations. While an exact birthdate is rarely known, various methods offer an estimated age. This article explores techniques to gauge a snapping turtle’s age, from examining their shells to considering their overall size.

Reading Scute Rings

The primary method for estimating a snapping turtle’s age involves examining the growth rings, known as annuli, on their scutes. Scutes are the individual, keratinous plates forming the outer layer of a turtle’s shell. As a turtle grows, new keratin layers are added to these scutes, creating concentric rings that resemble a tree’s annual growth rings. Each distinct ring can represent a year of growth, with wider, lighter rings indicating rapid growth and narrower, darker rings suggesting slower growth.

These growth patterns are influenced by environmental factors like food availability, temperature fluctuations, and nesting activity in females. This method is more reliable for younger turtles, whose growth is more consistent and rings are more pronounced, but becomes less accurate with age. Older turtles often have worn-down scutes, making rings difficult to count or completely obscured. A turtle may also form multiple rings within a single year during abundant resources, or no rings during harsh conditions, complicating precise age determination.

Estimating Age by Size

Beyond scute rings, a snapping turtle’s size, specifically its carapace length (the upper shell), can indicate age, particularly for very young or very old individuals. Hatchlings measure 1 to 2 inches in carapace length upon emerging from their eggs. Common snapping turtles can reach 7 inches by 10 years of age and about 11 inches by 25 years. Adult common snapping turtle females average around 11 inches, while males tend to be larger, reaching about 13.3 inches.

Growth rates in snapping turtles are not uniform and vary significantly based on factors like diet, habitat quality, and regional climate. Turtles with ample food and favorable temperatures grow faster than those in less ideal conditions. While a larger, heavier turtle is older, there is no precise formula to convert size directly into age due to these environmental variables. Observing the shell for signs of wear, erosion, or the presence of algae or moss can also suggest an older turtle, as these characteristics accumulate over many years.

Limitations and Lifespan

No method provides a 100% accurate age for snapping turtles, especially for wild individuals. Counting scute rings, while a common technique, is not always reliable because rings can become worn, indistinct, or multiple rings may form in a single year due to varying growth conditions. Growth ring counts can be incorrect even for young turtles. Similarly, using size as an age estimator is imprecise due to the wide range of growth rates influenced by environmental factors and individual differences.

Wild Common Snapping Turtles typically live between 30 and 45 years, though some individuals in protected environments have lived for over 100 years. Alligator Snapping Turtles generally live up to 45 years in the wild, but estimates suggest they might live for 80 to 120 years, with a theoretical lifespan of up to 200 years. Given these limitations, it is advisable to observe wild turtles from a distance and avoid handling them.
