How to Take BlueChew: Timing, Food, and Safety

BlueChew tablets are chewable, so you simply chew them thoroughly and swallow, no water required. But the timing, dosing, and precautions differ depending on which of the three active ingredients your prescription contains. Here’s what you need to know for each option.

The Three BlueChew Options

BlueChew offers chewable tablets with three different active ingredients, each at lower doses than their traditional pill counterparts:

  • Sildenafil (the same active ingredient in Viagra): available in 30 mg or 45 mg chewable tablets
  • Tadalafil (the same active ingredient in Cialis): available in 6 mg or 9 mg chewable tablets
  • Vardenafil (the same active ingredient in Levitra): available in 8 mg chewable tablets

Because these are chewable formulations, they’re designed to start dissolving in your mouth rather than your stomach. Chew the tablet completely before swallowing. You don’t need water, though you can take a sip if you’d like.

When to Take Each Type

The biggest practical difference between the three options is timing. Sildenafil and vardenafil are taken before sexual activity, while tadalafil can be used either on demand or as a daily tablet.

Sildenafil: Take one tablet roughly 30 to 60 minutes before you anticipate sexual activity. Effects typically last around four to six hours. Do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period.

Vardenafil: Take one tablet approximately 60 minutes beforehand. Like sildenafil, it’s limited to one dose per day.

Tadalafil (as needed): Take one tablet at least 30 minutes before activity. Tadalafil stays active in your body much longer than the other two, often up to 36 hours, which is why it’s sometimes called “the weekend pill.” No more than one dose per day.

Tadalafil (daily): If your provider prescribes it for daily use, take it at the same time every day regardless of when (or whether) you plan to have sex. This keeps a steady low level of the medication in your system so you don’t need to plan around timing at all.

How Food Affects Absorption

A heavy, high-fat meal eaten around the same time as sildenafil can delay peak absorption by about an hour and reduce the amount of the drug that reaches your bloodstream by roughly 29%. In practice, though, clinical studies found this didn’t translate into a meaningful loss of effectiveness for most men. Still, if you want the fastest possible onset with sildenafil or vardenafil, taking them on a lighter stomach is a reasonable approach.

Tadalafil is less sensitive to food. You can take it with or without a meal and expect similar results, which is part of what makes the daily dosing option convenient.

One firm rule across all three: avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Grapefruit interferes with the enzymes that break down these medications, which can increase drug levels in your blood and raise the risk of side effects.

What to Expect After Taking It

These medications don’t produce an automatic erection. They work by increasing blood flow to the penis when you’re sexually aroused. Without arousal, you’re unlikely to notice much effect.

Common side effects include headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, and indigestion. These are generally mild and tend to fade as the medication wears off. Some men also notice slight changes in vision (a blue tint, mostly with sildenafil) or muscle aches (more common with tadalafil, especially the next day).

If you experience an erection lasting four hours or longer, that’s a medical emergency called priapism and requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage.

Dangerous Drug Interactions

The most critical safety concern is combining any of these medications with nitrates, a class of drugs prescribed for chest pain. Both nitrates and these ED medications lower blood pressure through similar pathways, and taking them together can cause a sudden, dangerous drop in blood pressure. This applies to prescription nitrates like nitroglycerin and isosorbide, but also to recreational “poppers” (amyl nitrate or nitrite), which work the same way.

If you’ve taken sildenafil or vardenafil, you need to wait at least 24 hours before using any nitrate. Tadalafil stays in your system longer, so the recommended window is at least 48 hours.

Alpha-blockers, often prescribed for enlarged prostate or high blood pressure, also interact with all three medications. The combination can amplify blood pressure drops, especially when both drugs are taken close together. If you’re already on an alpha-blocker, your prescribing provider should start you on the lowest ED medication dose and separate the timing of each drug.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep your BlueChew tablets at room temperature, ideally between 68°F and 86°F. Store them away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep the packaging sealed when you’re not using them. Don’t freeze them or leave them in a hot car. Like all medications, they have an expiration date printed on the packaging, and potency can decline after that point.
