The primary purpose for application is often to facilitate overseeding, where a thin layer acts as a protective mulch over newly sown seeds.
Peat moss is highly valued for its ability to absorb and hold up to 20 times its dry weight in water, which is crucial for seed germination. This moisture retention creates a stable, damp environment around the seed, preventing it from drying out. Beyond overseeding, the material can be used to topdress established turf, incorporating organic matter that lightens dense soils and boosts nutrient capacity.
Preparing the Lawn for Application
Proper preparation ensures the peat moss fully integrates with the existing soil. Begin by mowing the lawn to a low height, approximately one to two inches, which exposes the soil surface and allows the amendment to reach the ground. If the soil is severely compacted, mechanical aeration using a core aerator before application will encourage deeper penetration.
Calculating the necessary volume involves measuring the lawn’s square footage and determining the desired application depth, which should be between 1/8 to 1/4 inch. A thicker layer risks smothering the existing grass blades and blocking sunlight. Once the volume is calculated, compressed bales of peat moss should be broken apart and fluffed up, ideally in a wheelbarrow, to prepare for easy spreading.
Step-by-Step Spreading Methods
Spreading peat moss is best accomplished manually because its light texture prevents it from flowing evenly through standard broadcast spreaders. Start by distributing small, manageable piles of the fluffed material across the lawn area in a grid-like pattern to ensure uniform coverage. This prevents the need to drag heavy equipment over freshly seeded or prepared soil.
Use the backside of a leaf rake or a specialized landscaping rake to gently work the piles across the surface of the lawn. The goal is to achieve an extremely thin, even topdressing layer, no more than 1/4 inch deep, that settles down to the soil level. The rake helps the material filter down between the existing grass blades without completely burying them.
The finished application should result in a translucent layer where the grass blades are still visible. This even coverage ensures the peat moss effectively retains moisture and protects the soil surface. For large areas, specialized peat moss spreaders, which are rolling cages, can dispense the material more efficiently and consistently than manual raking.
Immediate Post-Application Watering
Immediately following application, the lawn must be watered thoroughly but gently to settle the peat moss into the soil structure. Dry peat moss is hydrophobic, meaning it actively repels water until it becomes saturated. Use a light misting or gentle shower setting to overcome this resistance without creating runoff that washes away the material.
Continue watering until the peat moss layer changes color from a lighter brown to a dark black, indicating complete saturation. This saturation activates the material’s water-holding capacity and prevents it from being lofted by wind. If applied over newly sown grass seed, the top inch of soil should be kept consistently moist for the next two to three weeks to encourage germination.
