The Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is a classic houseplant prized for its lush, arching foliage, yet it is sensitive to the indoor environment. When conditions are not ideal, this tropical native quickly exhibits signs of distress, including fronds turning brown, drying out, or dropping off entirely. These symptoms indicate that a change in care is necessary to restore the fern’s vibrant health.

Diagnosing the Decline

Identifying the root cause of the Boston Fern’s decline requires a careful examination of the plant’s appearance, as different symptoms point to distinct problems. Brown, crispy leaf tips and edges are the most common sign of distress, indicating a lack of ambient moisture or a lapse in watering. This confirms the plant is desiccating, either from overly dry air or soil that has been allowed to dry out completely.

Conversely, leaves that turn uniformly yellow and appear limp or soft, often accompanied by wilting, suggest an issue with overwatering or poor drainage. Excess moisture in the soil suffocates the roots, leading to root rot, where the roots become brown and mushy.
