Mullein garlic oil (MGO) is a traditional preparation used to soothe minor ear discomfort and soften earwax buildup. It combines the anti-inflammatory properties of mullein (Verbascum thapsus) with the antimicrobial qualities of garlic (Allium sativum) in a carrier oil base. Safely utilizing this herbal remedy requires following a precise sequence of steps, starting with a thorough safety check and careful preparation.
Essential Preparation and Safety Screening
Before considering the use of mullein garlic oil, it is paramount to rule out conditions where applying any liquid to the ear canal is unsafe. You must not use the oil if you suspect a perforated or ruptured eardrum, which is a serious contraindication. Signs of perforation include visible drainage of pus or blood, or sudden, severe ear pain. If these symptoms are present, seek professional medical advice immediately.
A proper temperature check is necessary, as cold oil can cause dizziness or vertigo, and hot oil can damage the delicate ear canal tissue. To warm the oil safely, place the sealed dropper bottle into a cup of warm (not hot) water for several minutes until it reaches body temperature. Never use a microwave to warm the oil, as this can create dangerous hot spots. Test a drop on the back of your wrist to ensure the temperature is comfortable before proceeding.
The final preparatory step involves positioning the recipient to allow gravity to assist the oil’s flow. The person should lie down on their side with the affected ear facing directly upward. This position must be maintained throughout the application and for several minutes afterward to allow the oil to coat the ear canal.
The Step-by-Step Application Procedure
Once the oil is properly warmed and the individual is correctly positioned, the drops can be administered using the provided dropper. The typical dosage is generally between two and three drops, but always refer to the specific manufacturer’s instructions for the exact quantity. Hold the dropper tip just above the ear canal opening, taking care not to insert the tip into the ear or let it touch the skin to prevent contamination.
To ensure the oil reaches the deepest part of the ear canal, the outer ear must be gently manipulated to straighten the natural curve.
Manipulating the Ear
For adults and children older than three years of age, gently pull the outer ear (pinna) upward and backward.
For children younger than three, whose ear canals are angled differently, the outer ear should be pulled gently downward and backward. This subtle repositioning creates a straighter path for the liquid to flow.
After the drops have been successfully instilled, gently press or massage the small flap of cartilage in front of the ear canal, known as the tragus. This light pressure helps to push air bubbles out and encourages the oil to fully disperse within the canal. Remain in the side-lying position for a minimum of five to ten minutes to allow the oil to fully penetrate the ear canal.
Post-Application Care and Oil Storage
After the required waiting period, the individual can slowly sit up, and some of the oil may drain out of the ear canal. Gently wipe away any excess oil from the outer ear with a clean tissue. If excess oil is a concern, a small, loose cotton ball may be placed only in the concha bowl, which is the shallow depression of the outer ear, to catch the drainage. Do not push the cotton ball deep into the ear canal, as this can absorb the oil or push it further into the ear.
Maintaining the integrity of the mullein garlic oil requires proper long-term storage to preserve its herbal properties. The oil should be stored in its original, tightly capped container in a cool, dark place, away from direct heat and sunlight. Always check the expiration date and discard the oil if it looks cloudy or smells rancid. Never return the dropper to the bottle if the tip has touched the ear or any other surface, as this introduces contaminants that can reduce the product’s efficacy.
