Diagnosing the Decline
The first step in any successful revival is accurately identifying the underlying cause of the grass deterioration. Begin by physically testing the soil surface; hard, dense ground often indicates severe soil compaction, restricting root growth and oxygen exchange. If the lawn feels spongy underfoot, this suggests an excessive layer of thatch, which prevents water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Inspect the grass blades and roots for signs of pests or disease, or look for widespread yellowing or purpling, which signals a severe nutrient deficiency or imbalanced soil pH. A simple soil test is the most accurate tool to confirm pH levels and specific nutrient imbalances before moving on to corrective action.
