Specialized tools like a driveway scraper or a wire brush disturb shallow-rooted growth without excessively displacing the gravel. A stiff rake can also agitate the top layer of stone, pulling up young weeds and exposing roots to sunlight, causing them to dry out.
Another non-chemical solution involves applying heat to eradicate unwanted vegetation. Flame weeding uses a propane torch to quickly heat the plant tissue, effectively spot treating weeds in gravel. These products often contain systemic ingredients, such as glyphosate, which are absorbed by the foliage and translocated to the roots, ensuring a complete kill of existing grass.
In contrast, a pre-emergent herbicide prevents new seeds from sprouting by forming a chemical barrier in the top layer of the gravel. Ingredients like prodiamine inhibit cell division in germinating seeds, stopping growth before it becomes visible. Applying a pre-emergent after initial cleanup minimizes future outbreaks. When using any chemical herbicide, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and apply the product on a calm day to prevent drift onto surrounding landscaping.
Natural and Homemade Weed Killers
Several household ingredients can be repurposed as non-synthetic contact herbicides. High-concentration horticultural vinegar (10% to 20% acetic acid) is more effective than standard household vinegar for killing tougher grass. This strong acid rapidly draws moisture from the leaf tissue, causing the plant to burn and shrivel quickly. Applying this solution on a hot, sunny day maximizes effectiveness, though repeated applications may be necessary for perennial weeds.
Salt mixtures dehydrate the plant and create a high-salinity environment toxic to plant life. However, sodium ions can leach into the surrounding soil and cause long-term sterilization, potentially harming desirable plants bordering the driveway. Therefore, salt should only be used sparingly in isolated areas. Boiling water offers a simple, non-toxic alternative, instantly killing young weeds by scalding the foliage and roots, but it is less practical for treating large areas.
Stopping Grass Regrowth
Long-term prevention is necessary once the grass is removed, focusing on minimizing factors that allow regrowth. A primary step is ensuring proper under-layer preparation by installing or repairing landscape fabric beneath the gravel. This woven barrier blocks weed seeds from establishing roots in the underlying soil while still allowing water to drain through, unlike solid plastic sheeting.
Proper drainage is equally important because standing water encourages the decomposition of organic debris, creating a richer medium for growth. If the driveway frequently retains water, re-grading the surface to ensure a slight slope directs water away and keeps the aggregate dry. Periodically topping up the driveway with fresh gravel helps bury existing seeds and blocks sunlight necessary for germination. Maintaining a minimum gravel depth of at least four inches helps prevent grass roots from finding purchase and moisture.
