While mechanical grinding offers a quick solution, using fire to combust the stump is a traditional and effective method, especially for dry, older wood. Essential Preparation and Safety Clearances
Before initiating any burn, confirm the legality of the action by checking local fire codes, burn bans, and permit requirements. Open-air burning of organic materials is prohibited in many areas, and ignoring these regulations can result in significant fines and legal liability. Once legal clearance is secured, prepare the surrounding area to establish a safe fire break. This involves clearing all flammable materials, such as dry leaves, grass, and debris, within at least a five-foot radius of the stump.
To contain the fire, dig a shallow trench or “moat” around the stump’s perimeter. This firebreak should be filled with non-flammable material like dirt or sand, or the surrounding soil should be thoroughly saturated with water. Igniting and Sustaining the Stump Burn
The combustion process begins by filling the prepared holes with a fuel source and kindling material to establish a sustained heat source. Many opt to saturate the wood with a less volatile fuel like kerosene or fuel oil, allowing it to soak into the wood fibers for 24 to 48 hours. Gasoline should never be used due to its extreme volatility and high risk of explosion. Alternatively, powdered chemical stump removers, typically containing potassium nitrate, can be dissolved with boiling water in the holes to accelerate drying and flammability.
Once the wood is adequately prepared, pile charcoal briquettes or dry scrap wood directly onto and around the stump, concentrating them over the drilled holes. The fire is then carefully ignited, and the initial flame should be contained within the charcoal and the stump’s structure.

To encourage the fire to burn down into the roots, maintain oxygen flow by occasionally repositioning the charcoal or adding more fuel to the top. Post-Burn Cleanup and Site Restoration

The remaining ashes and smoldering material must be thoroughly doused with water until no heat or smoke is detectable. This eliminates the risk of subsurface reignition. Use a shovel to turn the ashes and remaining charred wood while applying water to confirm the process is fully complete and safe.
The resulting cavity will contain a mixture of fine ash and charred debris, which must be carefully removed and disposed of responsibly. Ash from wood is alkaline; while it can be spread thinly over a garden, a large concentration should be composted or disposed of separately to avoid altering soil pH.
