Supportive devices like hernia trusses or abdominal binders provide gentle, consistent compression. A hernia truss applies targeted pressure to the site, helping keep a reducible hernia from bulging during the day. These devices should be put on while lying down and only after the hernia has been gently pushed back into place. Wearing one over an already bulging hernia can increase discomfort.
It is helpful to learn techniques that minimize strain during common movements. When getting out of bed, rolling onto your side first and using your arms to push your body up, known as the log-roll technique, avoids direct engagement of the abdominal muscles. Similarly, maintaining an upright posture while sitting or standing, with the chest slightly lifted, helps to minimize intra-abdominal pressure that can push the hernia outward.
Managing Internal Abdominal Pressure
Controlling the pressure inside the abdominal cavity is a primary focus of at-home hernia management. Any activity that causes straining, such as heavy lifting or intense coughing, significantly increases this internal pressure and must be avoided. When unavoidable actions like coughing or sneezing occur, a technique called “splinting” can stabilize the area.

Heat packs are generally not recommended for hernia pain because heat increases blood flow, which may worsen inflammation and swelling.
