How to Recycle Coffee Grounds for Home and Garden

Spent coffee grounds are the residue left over after brewing your favorite cup. Globally, millions of tons of these grounds are generated each year, and when sent to landfills, they can produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Repurposing this byproduct leverages the grounds’ rich content of nitrogen, antioxidants, and abrasive texture for practical uses around the home and garden.

Essential Preparation and Storage

Proper preparation is necessary before using coffee grounds for any long-term application, as their natural moisture content encourages mold growth. Thorough drying is the most important step, accomplished by spreading the grounds in a thin layer on a baking sheet or newspaper to promote rapid evaporation.

Alternatively, dry them in an oven set to the lowest temperature (150°F to 200°F) for 20 to 30 minutes. Once dry and crumbly, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. This minimizes moisture reabsorption and prevents mold formation.
