How to Properly Wear a Female Condom

An internal condom (often called the female condom or FC2) is a non-hormonal barrier device. It is a thin, loose-fitting nitrile sheath inserted into the vagina before sexual activity. It offers dual protection against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When used correctly, the internal condom has an efficacy rate of approximately 95% in preventing pregnancy.

Preparation and Positioning

Before insertion, check the packaging for the expiration date and inspect the wrapper for defects. Open the wrapper gently at the designated notch, avoiding sharp objects that could damage the sheath.

The condom has two flexible rings: a smaller inner ring at the closed end and a larger outer ring at the open end. The inner ring anchors the condom deep inside the vagina, while the outer ring remains outside, covering the labia and vaginal opening.

The device comes pre-lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant. If needed, apply additional water-based or silicone-based lubricant to the inside or outside. Find a relaxed and comfortable position for insertion, such as squatting, lying down, or standing with one foot elevated.

Step-by-Step Insertion Guide

Hold the condom with the open end facing away from you. Grasp the inner ring between your thumb and forefinger and squeeze the sides together, making it narrow for easy entry, similar to a tampon. Guide the squeezed inner ring into the vagina.

Use your index finger to push the inner ring as far up as it will comfortably go, until it rests against the cervix or near the pubic bone. Ensure the sheath is not twisted inside the vagina, as twisting affects the barrier’s function.

After the inner ring is secure, the larger outer ring should hang about an inch outside the vaginal opening, lying flat against the vulva. The condom can be inserted up to eight hours before sexual activity.

During activity, the partner’s penis should be guided into the opening of the outer ring. If the outer ring is pushed inside or the penis slips between the condom and the vaginal wall, stop immediately and reposition the device.

Removal and Safe Disposal

The internal condom must remain in place throughout sexual activity and should be removed immediately after intercourse, before standing up. The removal technique prevents contained fluids from spilling.

Begin by twisting the outer ring, which is hanging outside the body, to seal the contents within the sheath. Once sealed, gently pull the condom out of the vagina.

The anchored inner ring helps hold the fluids inside the pouch as you slowly withdraw the sheath. This twisting and slow removal action is a safeguard against leakage.

After removal, the condom must be disposed of safely. Wrap the used condom in a tissue or paper towel and place it directly into the trash.

Never flush the internal condom down the toilet, as this can cause significant plumbing blockages due to its material and size. The internal condom is a single-use device and must not be reused under any circumstances.
