The safest and most convenient option is soaking the retainer in a solution made with commercial cleaning tablets designed specifically for retainers or aligners. These tablets are formulated to remove plaque and stains without damaging the plastic material.
An approved at-home alternative is a diluted white vinegar solution, typically using a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar to water. Soaking the retainer for about 15 to 30 minutes in this solution can help dissolve calcium deposits, or tartar, and kill odor-causing bacteria. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, alcohol-based mouthwash, or household cleaners, as these substances can degrade the plastic, cause discoloration, and leave harmful residues unsafe for oral contact.
