How to Make Your Pothos Grow Faster

The Pothos plant (Epipremnum aureum) is a resilient, low-maintenance houseplant. While it survives in various indoor conditions, its growth rate is directly influenced by the quality of its environment. Accelerating its natural vining habit requires specific adjustments to light, nutrition, and physical care. Optimizing these factors can transform a slow-growing Pothos into a rapidly expanding cascade of foliage.

Maximizing Light Exposure

Light is the primary energy source, directly fueling the photosynthesis process responsible for growth. For Pothos, the ideal setting is bright, indirect light, which provides high energy without the risk of leaf burn. Place the plant near an east-facing window for gentle morning sun or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window.

Insufficient light causes smaller leaves and sparser stems as the plant stretches to find illumination (etiolation). To counteract this, supplement natural light with full-spectrum LED grow lights. These should have a color temperature between 5000K and 6500K and be positioned 12 to 18 inches above the foliage. Providing enhanced lighting for 12 to 14 hours daily boosts the plant’s metabolic rate, resulting in faster, more robust growth.

Optimizing Nutritional Intake

To support rapid growth, the Pothos requires a consistent supply of nutrients, especially during the active growing season in spring and summer. Nitrogen (N) is the nutrient most responsible for lush, green, leafy growth. Fertilizing with a balanced NPK ratio (e.g., 20-20-20) or a nitrogen-heavy ratio (e.g., 3-1-2) provides the necessary building blocks for new cells and stems.

A liquid houseplant fertilizer is generally recommended because its strength is easily controlled through dilution. Apply a diluted solution—often half the strength recommended on the package—about once a month during the growing season. This prevents root burn while ensuring steady nourishment. Over time, mineral salts from fertilizer can accumulate in the soil, potentially damaging the roots. Periodically flush the soil by watering thoroughly with plain water until the excess runs freely out of the drainage holes.

Water Management and Environmental Control

Proper hydration is foundational for fast growth, as water transports nutrients and maintains cell structure. The correct technique involves thoroughly soaking the soil until water drains from the bottom, then allowing the top one to two inches of soil to dry completely before watering again. This cycle prevents soggy conditions, which can lead to root rot and stunted growth.

The plant’s tropical origins mean it responds positively to higher ambient moisture and warmth. Maintaining a room temperature between 65°F and 80°F accelerates its metabolism. Humidity levels between 40% and 60% are beneficial and can be achieved using a humidifier or by placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water. Excellent drainage is necessary; the potting medium must be porous to quickly shed excess water and ensure root aeration.

Strategic Pruning and Training

Pothos naturally prioritizes vertical growth from its terminal bud (apical dominance), often resulting in long, sparse vines. Strategic pruning interrupts this process, forcing the plant to activate dormant lateral buds located at the leaf nodes. Cutting the vine just above a node encourages new side shoots, leading to a bushier, denser appearance.

Training the plant to climb a support structure can trigger a significant increase in leaf size and growth speed. Providing a moss pole or a plank allows the plant’s aerial roots to anchor, mimicking its natural tropical behavior. Keeping the moss pole moist encourages these roots to penetrate the support, signaling that the plant is securely climbing. This results in larger, more mature foliage.
