Selection and Handling of Pumpkins
The lifespan of your pumpkin begins with careful selection, as a healthy fruit is the best defense against early decay. Look for fully mature specimens exhibiting an even color and a hard, tough rind with a dull appearance. Avoid any pumpkins with visible blemishes, cuts, or bruises, as these imperfections act as entry points for decay-causing microorganisms.
A well-attached and firm stem, often called the “handle,” is a strong indicator of health and should remain intact. A missing or damaged stem speeds up moisture loss and creates a direct pathway for bacteria and mold spores to enter. When moving your selection, handle it gently by gripping the body, rather than the stem, to prevent breakage.
Surface Cleaning and Sanitization
Before applying any long-term seal, eliminate existing mold spores and bacteria residing on the pumpkin’s surface. Washing the pumpkin removes dirt and contaminants. A mild bleach solution is effective because sodium hypochlorite acts as a powerful antifungal and antibacterial agent.

Environmental Storage Factors
