How to Make a Salt Sock for Ear Infections

The salt sock is a simple, non-medical home remedy used to provide temporary relief from the pain associated with earaches, often stemming from ear infections. It functions as a localized heat compress, utilizing coarse salt’s ability to retain heat longer than a typical cloth compress. Applying gentle warmth near the ear can help soothe discomfort and may promote minor fluid movement, offering a brief respite from the pain. Preparing the Salt Sock

To create this home compress, gather a clean sock made of 100% white cotton and approximately 1 to 1.5 cups of coarse salt. Pure cotton is necessary because synthetic materials or colored dyes can melt or release unpleasant fumes when subjected to heat. Coarse salt, such as sea salt or rock salt, is preferred because the larger crystals retain heat more effectively and for a longer duration than fine table salt. This also prevents the granules from easily seeping out through the fabric’s weave.

Carefully pour the 1 to 1.5 cups of coarse salt into the cotton sock. This quantity should fill the toe and foot portion, making a compact packet roughly the size of a hand. Once filled, the open end must be secured tightly, either by tying a firm knot or using a piece of string to create a double knot. The finished salt sock should be full enough to hold its shape but still pliable enough to contour slightly to the area around the ear.

Heating and Application Instructions

The most recommended method for heating the prepared salt sock is on a clean, dry skillet or frying pan over a stovetop set to medium-low heat. Place the sock in the pan and heat it for approximately four to six minutes, flipping and shaking the sock every minute to ensure the salt heats evenly throughout. Alternatively, the salt sock can be heated in a microwave, starting with short intervals of 30 to 60 seconds. Salt heats quickly and unevenly in a microwave, which can degrade the sock’s material.
