Selecting the Right Sand and Tools
Choosing the correct sand type is important for the success of the project, as the wrong material can severely hinder grass health. The ideal choice is a coarse-grained, angular sand, such as masonry sand or a specialized top-dressing mix, which promotes excellent drainage and resists cementing together. The angular shape of the particles prevents them from settling too tightly, maintaining necessary air pockets within the soil structure.
Materials to avoid include fine-particle options like play sand or construction sand, as these compact easily, suffocating the grass roots. While pure sand is often used, a mixture of 70% sand and 30% organic material like compost is also effective, providing nutrients while offering leveling benefits.
For application, several tools are needed to efficiently move and spread the material. A sturdy wheelbarrow and a shovel transport the sand from the delivery area to the lawn. The most specialized tool is a lawn leveling rake, sometimes called a screed board or drag mat. This flat, wide tool uniformly distributes the sand across the surface and works it into the turf canopy.
Preparing the Yard for Sand Application
Proper preparation maximizes the effectiveness of the sand application. The initial step involves mowing the grass down to its lowest setting, called scalping, which allows the sand to settle closer to the soil surface. This short cut, ideally to an inch or less, is essential before spreading any material.
Next, the lawn should be thoroughly dethatched if the organic layer is thicker than half an inch. Removing excess thatch helps the sand integrate better with the underlying soil structure and prevents the creation of a hydrophobic layer. Aeration is useful, especially in areas with compacted soil, as it creates small holes that the sand can fall into, improving subsurface drainage.
The lawn must be completely dry before beginning the leveling process, as wet grass causes the sand to clump and stick, making it impossible to spread evenly. All debris, such as sticks, leaves, and rocks, must be removed to prevent interference with the leveling tools.
The Step-by-Step Sand Leveling Process
The application relies on thin, repeated layers rather than a single heavy application. Calculate the volume of sand needed, remembering to apply no more than a half-inch of material at any one time to prevent smothering the turf. Start by dumping small piles of sand across the treatment area, distributing them strategically around low spots.
Using the back of a bow rake or a shovel, roughly spread the piles across the lawn. Use the lawn leveling rake or screed board, dragging it back and forth over the area in multiple directions. This action allows the sand to efficiently flow into the depressions and voids in the turf.
Once smooth, use a stiff-bristled push broom or a specialized drag mat to work the material down into the turf canopy. This ensures the sand settles at the base of the grass blades, promoting new root growth. The final appearance should be a thin layer where the tips of the grass blades are still visible. If low spots persist, multiple thin treatments over several weeks are preferred.
Post-Leveling Care and Follow-up
Immediate care focuses on settling the new material and promoting rapid turf recovery. As soon as the sand is spread, a light application of water is necessary to wash particles off the grass blades and settle the sand into the soil profile. This initial watering prevents the sand from drying into a hard crust.
Maintain the lawn with a slightly more frequent watering schedule for the first week or two to encourage growth. A daily or twice-daily light watering is beneficial for the first few days, especially for aggressive warm-season grasses. Once new growth is evident, return to a deeper, less frequent schedule to support strong, deep roots.
Applying a fast-acting, high-nitrogen starter fertilizer immediately helps stimulate the grass to quickly grow through the new sand layer. This provides the energy required for the turf to recover from scalping and topdressing. Allow the lawn to recover for two to four weeks before the next mowing. Remaining low spots can be addressed with a subsequent, thin application of sand.
