Shallow water sources are necessary for hydration, as ladybugs cannot safely drink from open pools of water. This setup provides a safe landing area where the beetles can drink without drowning.

Chemical applications directly target adult beetles, eggs, and larvae, which are often hidden on the undersides of leaves. Ladybugs feed directly on contaminated prey, accumulating toxic residues that lead to death or reproductive failure. If pest control is necessary, gardeners should utilize highly localized spot treatments, targeting only the specific pest cluster with a narrow-spectrum product during times when ladybug activity is low, such as late evening.
Aggressive garden cleanup, especially in the autumn, removes the very sites ladybugs rely on for survival. Raking and disposing of all leaf litter and trimming back every perennial stalk eliminates the overwintering habitat.
