How to Grow Spearmint: Planting, Care, and Harvest

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a perennial herb recognized for its sweet, mild flavor profile compared to its peppermint counterpart. Its pleasant aroma and versatility make it a favored addition to culinary dishes, beverages, and aromatic applications. This guide provides practical steps for successfully cultivating this vigorous plant, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh leaves.

Essential Environmental Needs

Spearmint thrives with adequate sun exposure. While it tolerates full sun, especially in cooler climates, it generally performs best in locations that receive partial shade during the hottest part of the day. Consistent moisture is necessary when planted in full sun, as the leaves can scorch if the soil dries out.

The ideal soil is rich and loamy, retaining moisture well but still offering excellent drainage. Poorly draining, waterlogged conditions will lead to root rot and plant failure. Spearmint prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, typically ranging between 6.0 and 7.0, which supports optimal nutrient uptake.

During the initial establishment phase, the soil must be kept consistently moist to encourage a robust root system. Once established, the plant will tolerate slightly drier conditions, but it should never be allowed to completely dry out, particularly in warm weather.

Starting Your Spearmint Patch

Starting spearmint from seed is possible, but germination is often slow and unpredictable, making vegetative propagation methods far more reliable. Utilizing cuttings, root divisions, or purchasing nursery transplants ensures a quicker start. Cuttings should be taken from non-flowering stems and placed directly into moist soil or water until roots form.

The best time to plant is in early spring after the last expected frost, or in early fall, allowing the roots to establish before winter dormancy. When planting bare roots or transplants, dig a hole just deep enough to cover the root ball or rhizome. Spearmint has shallow roots, and planting too deeply can hinder its initial growth.

Space individual plants approximately 18 to 24 inches apart if planting directly into the ground to accommodate its aggressive spreading habit. This spacing helps ensure proper air circulation and reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Water the newly set plants immediately after placing them to settle the soil around the roots and minimize transplant shock.

Routine Maintenance and Containment

Ongoing maintenance is relatively simple, but managing spearmint’s growth is necessary. The plant’s aggressive growth is driven by underground runners, known as rhizomes, which rapidly colonize adjacent garden space. This necessitates proactive containment measures to prevent it from becoming weedy.

The most effective containment strategy involves planting spearmint in a submerged container, such as a large plastic pot with the bottom cut out. The rim of this barrier should protrude an inch or two above the soil line to prevent the rhizomes from creeping over the top. Alternatively, planting spearmint in above-ground containers is an effective method of restriction.

Watering frequency depends on the temperature and whether the plant is contained, but the top inch of soil should not dry completely. Container-grown spearmint requires more frequent watering, sometimes daily during peak summer heat, compared to plants in the ground.

Spearmint requires minimal supplemental nutrients and often thrives without fertilization throughout the season. Excessive nitrogen encourages lush foliage but can dilute the concentration of aromatic oils. A light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring is sufficient if the soil is poor.

To encourage a bushy growth habit and maximize leaf production, regularly pinch back the growing tips of the stems. This prevents the plant from expending energy on flowering, which diminishes the flavor intensity of the leaves.

Harvesting and Preservation

The flavor and aromatic oil concentration in spearmint leaves are highest just before the plant begins to flower, which is the optimal time for a major harvest. Harvesting is best conducted in the morning after the dew has dried, as the volatile oils are most concentrated at this time.

When harvesting, use sharp shears to cut entire stems just above a leaf node, encouraging the plant to branch out and produce more foliage. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant’s total mass at any single time. This ensures the plant retains enough photosynthetic capacity for rapid regrowth.

For fresh use, stems can be placed in a glass of water on a countertop, where they will remain viable for several days. To preserve a larger yield, leaves can be dried by hanging small bundles of stems upside down in a warm, dark, and well-ventilated area.
