Selecting the Right Redwood and Planting Site
Successful redwood cultivation begins with identifying the species that thrives in your climate. Two main types are commonly grown: the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The Coast Redwood needs consistently high atmospheric moisture, often provided by coastal fog, and thrives in mild temperatures without extreme heat or cold. Giant Sequoias are more suited to inland climates, tolerating cold winters and requiring deep winter dormancy for optimal health.
A suitable planting location must offer deep, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic (pH 5.5 to 7.0). Redwood roots require ample space, so the site must be free from shallow bedrock or hardpan layers. Although saplings tolerate partial shade, established trees prefer full sun exposure to maximize growth potential.
