Successfully nurturing an apple tree from a bare root sapling to a mature, fruit-bearing specimen involves making informed decisions at every stage. Understanding the tree’s needs, from planting to annual maintenance, provides the foundation for a plentiful harvest.
Selecting the Right Variety and Location
The initial success depends heavily on selecting a variety suited to your local climate and space. Apple trees require a specific number of “chilling hours”—cumulative hours between 32°F and 45°F during winter dormancy—to properly break bud and produce fruit. Most common varieties need around 1,000 chilling hours, but low-chill varieties are available for warmer regions, requiring 300 to 500 hours.
