Small, white, five-petaled flowers, measuring about one-half to three-quarters of an inch across, emerge from April to June. Following the bloom, the plant produces small, dark red to purplish-black berries, which are compound drupes, typically ripening from green to red before reaching their mature color.

Swamp dewberry thrives in consistent moisture and often acidic soil. Its preferred native habitats include swamps, bogs, wet woodlands, forest edges, disturbed clearings, and streambanks. It is also found in moist or occasionally dry open soils and swales.
Geographically, Rubus hispidus is widespread across eastern and central North America. The plant prefers conditions ranging from full sun to partial shade, with dappled sunlight often being optimal. It grows best in acidic soils rich in organic matter.
