Cultivating this perennial indoors allows for a consistent, year-round supply of fresh sprigs regardless of the outdoor climate. Bringing the plant inside also effectively contains its aggressive, spreading nature, preventing the root system from taking over garden beds.

Starting Your Spearmint Plant

Starting a spearmint plant indoors can be achieved through three primary methods, though they vary greatly in speed and reliability. The most dependable method involves using stem cuttings, which quickly root in a glass of water or moist potting mix within seven to ten days. Cuttings offer a genetically identical clone of the parent plant, ensuring the desired flavor profile is maintained and accelerating the time to a harvestable plant.

Another reliable option is to purchase a small, store-bought transplant from a nursery, which immediately provides an established root system ready for a new container. Growing spearmint from seeds is the least recommended approach because germination is slow and the resulting plants can sometimes be inconsistent in flavor and growth habit. Regardless of the starting method, the container must have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Spearmint thrives best in a container that is wide rather than deep, such as a window box. Fill the container with a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, which often contains components like perlite or vermiculite to promote aeration. It is important to position the plant away from sudden temperature fluctuations, such as cold drafts near doors or the intense, dry heat from radiator vents.
