How to Grow and Care for Mexican Oregano

Mexican oregano, scientifically known as Poliomintha longiflora or Lippia graveolens, offers a distinct flavor profile, setting it apart from common oregano (Origanum vulgare). This aromatic herb, with its hints of citrus and licorice, is a key ingredient in authentic Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. It is a valuable addition to any herb garden, providing both culinary versatility and an attractive presence.

Understanding Mexican Oregano’s Needs

Mexican oregano thrives in conditions that mimic its native arid and semi-arid environments. It requires abundant sunlight, receiving at least six hours of direct sun daily. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, particularly in hotter climates, full sun exposure promotes the most robust growth and flavor development.

The plant prefers well-draining soil, towards sandy or rocky compositions. A slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.0-8.0) is suitable for its growth. Heavy, waterlogged soils should be avoided as they can lead to root issues. Mexican oregano is well-adapted to heat and drought. It is generally hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 11.

Planting and Establishing Mexican Oregano

Mexican oregano is resistant to most pests and diseases. If pests like aphids, leaf miners, or spider mites appear, manage them with organic solutions such as insecticidal soap or neem oil. It also deters deer.

Harvesting and Storing Mexican Oregano

Harvesting Mexican oregano at the right time ensures maximum flavor and encourages continued growth. Harvest before the plant begins to flower, when the essential oils are most concentrated in the leaves. Harvest in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day sets in for better flavor retention.

To harvest, snip stems or individual leaves using clean, sharp shears or scissors. Avoid removing more than one-third of the foliage at a time to allow for vigorous regrowth. Regular harvesting promotes bushiness and a continuous supply of fresh leaves.

For long-term storage, drying is an effective method. Air drying is suitable: tie small bundles of stems together and hang them upside down in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area. Alternatively, leaves can be dried using a dehydrator on a low setting or in an oven at its lowest temperature with the door ajar. Once completely dry and crumbly, remove leaves from the stems. Store dried leaves in airtight containers, such as glass jars, in a cool, dark place to preserve their flavor and aroma for extended periods. Fresh leaves can also be used directly in cooking, adding their unique taste to various dishes.
