This variety grows to a height of approximately 80 to 90 centimeters, making it a substantial presence in a garden border or cutting patch. Grown from a tuber, it produces flowers continuously from mid-summer until the first hard frost of autumn.
Establishing the Maya Dahlia
Successful growth begins with selecting a location that receives a minimum of six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Planting should occur only after the soil temperature has warmed sufficiently and all danger of spring frost has passed. The soil must be well-draining, as the tubers are highly susceptible to rot in waterlogged conditions.
Before planting, enrich the bed by incorporating compost or well-aged manure to improve soil structure and fertility. This initial preparation provides slow-release nutrition for the tuber to establish a robust root system. Avoid watering the planting site immediately, as the dormant tuber can easily rot before new growth begins. Natural soil moisture is typically sufficient until the first green shoots emerge above the surface. Once the plant has sprouted, begin a consistent watering schedule to support the developing foliage. Essential Seasonal Maintenance
Consistent, deep watering is required throughout the growing season, especially during dry weather or intense summer heat. Allow the tubers to remain in the ground for one to two weeks following the frost to allow the skins to thicken, improving resistance to damage during storage.
