How to Grow and Care for Guppy Grass

Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis) is a popular and straightforward aquatic stem plant for freshwater aquarists. Its soft, feathery green foliage provides exceptional shelter for fish fry and invertebrates like shrimp, boosting survival rates in community tanks. Its rapid growth and ability to draw nutrients directly from the water column improve water quality and minimize algae proliferation.

Initial Setup and Placement

Guppy Grass can be introduced into an aquarium by either floating or anchoring. Allowing the plant to float freely is the most common approach, forming a dense mat near the water’s surface. This configuration is particularly beneficial in breeding tanks, creating a natural haven for newborn fry.

For a structured aquascape, Guppy Grass can be anchored to the substrate or decor. Since its roots function mainly for attachment rather than nutrient absorption, lightly bury the bottom portion of the stems into fine gravel or sand. Alternatively, stems can be tied in small bundles to driftwood or rockwork using plant weights or thread until they establish their hold. Anchoring a stem that has been floating may cause a temporary melting phase as it adjusts.

Ideal Environmental Conditions for Growth

Guppy Grass tolerates various water parameters, making it an excellent choice for many setups. It thrives best in tropical conditions, with an optimal temperature range of 20–26 °C (68–79 °F). It can survive temperatures from 18°C (64°F) to 30°C (86°F). A neutral to slightly alkaline pH, between 6.0 and 8.0, is easily accommodated.

The plant’s lighting requirement is flexible, performing well in low to medium light environments while maintaining a vibrant green color. Higher light intensity accelerates its fast growth, but prolonged exposure to very high light can induce a reddish tint or burn the foliage. A photoperiod of eight to twelve hours daily is sufficient for healthy growth.

As a non-rooting stem plant, Guppy Grass is classified as a water column feeder, meaning it absorbs its necessary nutrients directly from the surrounding water. A nutrient-rich substrate is unnecessary, as the plant’s growth is fueled by dissolved compounds like nitrates and phosphates. For maximum growth, supplementing the water column with liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients and essential micronutrients is recommended. While not required, supplemental carbon dioxide (CO2) significantly boosts its growth rate.

Ongoing Care and Trimming

The most significant aspect of long-term Guppy Grass care is managing its vigorous growth, which can quickly overwhelm smaller aquariums. Regular trimming, often every few weeks, is necessary to prevent dense mats that restrict water flow or shade lower-growing plants. Thinning the top layer is important, as dense surface growth can impede gas exchange.

To trim the plant, use sharp scissors to clip the stems back to a desired length or density. Periodically remove older, less attractive lower sections to encourage fresh, dense growth near the cut point. This trimming process is the primary method of propagation, as any healthy piece of stem can be replanted or allowed to float elsewhere to start a new colony.

Because of its finely textured leaves, Guppy Grass can accumulate detritus or algae, particularly in areas of stagnant water flow. Ensuring proper water circulation around the plant bundles helps prevent debris buildup and keeps the leaves clean. Maintaining optimal water parameters and a consistent liquid fertilizer routine helps the plant outcompete algae for nutrients, which is a more effective long-term strategy than manual removal.
