How to Get Rid of Grass-Carrying Wasps

Grass-carrying wasps are solitary insects commonly found in yards and around homes. Unlike their highly social relatives, these wasps do not form large colonies or aggressively defend a hive. They become a nuisance when they choose structural elements, such as window tracks or furniture crevices, for nesting. Managing their presence requires understanding their biology and using safe, effective strategies.

Identifying Grass-Carrying Wasps

Grass-carrying wasps are easily distinguishable from more aggressive social wasps. Adults are medium-sized, typically measuring around 0.7 to 0.79 inches (18–20 mm) in length. Their bodies are mostly black, with smoky black or reddish-brown wings, and they have a noticeable constriction between the thorax and abdomen, characteristic of thread-waisted wasps.

These wasps are solitary, meaning each female builds and provisions her own nest. This solitary nature makes them non-aggressive; they will only sting if handled or seriously threatened. The most definitive identification feature is their nesting material: they are often seen flying while carrying a large piece of grass or plant fiber.

The female uses these blades of grass to line and plug pre-existing cavities, which serve as nursery tunnels for her offspring. Common natural nesting sites include hollowed plant stems, abandoned beetle galleries, or holes between rocks. Around a home, they frequently choose the tracks of aluminum storm windows or door frames. Inside the grass-lined cavity, she provisions the nest with paralyzed tree crickets or katydids, which serve as food for the developing larvae.

Deterring Wasps Through Habitat Management

The most effective long-term strategy for managing grass-carrying wasps is eliminating the pre-existing cavities they use for nesting. Since they do not excavate new holes, prevention focuses on sealing potential entry points around the home and garden.

Inspect outdoor structures and furniture for small gaps or hollows that a female wasp could utilize. Seal any open holes in wooden structures, sheds, or outdoor furniture with caulk or wood putty. Pay close attention to the tracks and crevices of sliding windows and doors, as these tight spaces are a favored nesting location.

In the garden, remove or manage materials that provide natural nesting tunnels. Piles of hollow stems, such as those from perennial plants or bamboo, should be cleared away or bundled tightly to remove access to the interior. This habitat modification minimizes the likelihood of future nesting near the home.

Direct Removal of Nests and Individuals

When a nest has already been constructed in an inconvenient location, direct removal may be necessary. Given the wasp’s solitary nature, chemical treatments are often unnecessary and should be considered a last resort. The simplest method is mechanical removal of the grass plug and its contents.

You can safely remove the grass and the yellow-brown, papery cocoons by hand or with a small tool like a screwdriver. This is best done in the late evening or at night when the adult wasp is less active. Once the nest material is removed, promptly seal the cavity entrance with caulk or a tight-fitting plug to prevent future nesting attempts.

If the nest is inaccessible or if a chemical treatment is preferred, a targeted application of an insecticidal dust is the most effective approach. The dust should be puffed directly into the entry hole, allowing the wasp to carry the insecticide further into the tunnel. Always follow label instructions precisely and consider contacting a pest control professional if you have a known allergy to stings.
