A rotary spreader throws granules in a wide arc, while a drop spreader releases them directly beneath the hopper, making it ideal for areas adjacent to garden beds or sidewalks.

Before filling the hopper, calibrate the spreader according to the setting recommended on the fertilizer bag. This setting determines the product release rate; using the wrong setting leads to over- or under-fertilization. To prevent accidental burns or concentrated dumping, fill the spreader on a driveway or patio, not on the lawn itself.

The physical spreading technique begins by creating a perimeter pass around the entire lawn, establishing a turning area.
