Understanding Bermuda Grass Nutrient Demands
The nutritional needs of Bermuda grass are substantial, focusing particularly on Nitrogen (N). Nitrogen is the primary element responsible for chlorophyll production, driving the lush green color and aggressive shoot growth. Because Bermuda grass grows quickly during the summer, it rapidly depletes the available nitrogen in the soil.
While nitrogen promotes top growth, Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) support overall plant function. Phosphorus is essential for energy transfer and robust root development, especially during establishment. Potassium, often called potash, strengthens the grass’s cellular structure, enhancing its tolerance to environmental stresses like drought, disease, and extreme temperatures.
Before selecting any fertilizer, conduct a soil test to determine the existing nutrient profile and the soil’s pH level. Bermuda grass thrives best in a slightly acidic to neutral pH range, typically between 6.0 and 7.0. The soil test reveals the exact amounts of phosphorus and potassium present. This is important because these nutrients do not deplete as quickly as nitrogen, and over-application can be detrimental or wasteful.
Decoding Fertilizer Ratios and Types
Fertilizer bags display the N-P-K ratio, representing the percentage by weight of Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P₂O₅), and Potash (K₂O). For a mature Bermuda lawn, the ideal nutrient ratio is generally a high-nitrogen blend, such as a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio (e.g., 15-5-10). The choice between quick-release versus slow-release nitrogen sources is important for managing growth. Quick-release nitrogen is immediately water-soluble, providing a rapid green-up within days, but the effect dissipates quickly, necessitating frequent applications. This solubility also carries a higher risk of “burning” the turf if applied too heavily or without immediate watering.
Slow-release nitrogen is coated or chemically bound to release nutrients gradually over several weeks or months. This provides a consistent, steady nutrient supply that promotes uniform growth without the dramatic spikes associated with quick-release sources. Most successful Bermuda fertilization programs rely on slow-release fertilizers for the majority of the season to maintain consistent color and minimize application frequency.
Establishing the Seasonal Fertilization Schedule
The timing of fertilization for Bermuda grass is dependent on the grass’s biological activity, dictated primarily by soil temperature. The first application, known as the spring green-up feed, should occur when the soil temperature consistently stabilizes above 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit at a four-inch depth. Wait until the lawn is at least 50% green to ensure the grass is actively growing and ready to absorb nutrients. This prevents the fertilizer from stimulating tender new growth that could be damaged by a late frost.
Once the lawn is fully out of dormancy, the summer maintenance period begins. During this peak growing season, the goal is to apply between 0.5 to 1.5 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. Using a slow-release product allows applications to be spaced approximately six to eight weeks apart, sustaining color and density. A high-maintenance lawn may require monthly feeding with lighter doses to ensure the nitrogen level remains constant.
The final application prepares the turf for winter dormancy and should be completed in late summer or early fall. This feed must be applied at least six weeks before the area’s average first frost date so the grass can absorb nutrients before growth slows significantly. This application should be lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium, such as a 12-0-12 blend. Proper Application Methods and Post-Fertilization Care
Accurate measurement of the application area and the product is necessary to prevent fertilizer burn and ensure even feeding. Determining the total amount of “actual nitrogen” in the bag is the first step, calculated by multiplying the bag’s weight by the percentage of nitrogen. This calculation allows you to measure the exact quantity of product needed to deliver the target rate, such as 1.5 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
A broadcast or rotary spreader provides the most uniform distribution for granular fertilizer. To minimize the risk of streaking or striping the lawn from inconsistent coverage, set the spreader to half the recommended rate.
