How to Eat on Wegovy: What to Eat and Avoid

Eating on Wegovy comes down to three priorities: getting enough protein to protect your muscle mass, choosing foods that won’t amplify the drug’s gastrointestinal side effects, and staying hydrated despite a reduced appetite. Because Wegovy slows digestion significantly, the foods you tolerate and the way you eat will likely need to change from your pre-medication habits.

Why Wegovy Changes How You Eat

Wegovy works partly by slowing how fast your stomach empties. Food stays in your digestive system longer than it normally would, which is one reason you feel full sooner and stay full longer. But this slower emptying also means certain foods, particularly greasy or heavy meals, sit in your stomach for an extended period and can cause nausea, bloating, heartburn, or indigestion. About 9% of adults on Wegovy experience indigestion, and nausea rates are even higher, especially in the first weeks of treatment. These side effects tend to improve over time, but how you eat plays a major role in how quickly you adjust.

Prioritize Protein at Every Meal

The biggest nutritional risk on Wegovy isn’t a vitamin deficiency. It’s losing muscle along with fat. When you eat significantly less (which most people on Wegovy do), your body can break down lean muscle for energy unless you’re actively protecting it with adequate protein.

General dietary guidelines suggest 46 grams of protein daily for women and 56 grams for men, but people on Wegovy typically need more. Bariatric specialists often recommend 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 200-pound person, that works out to roughly 109 to 136 grams daily, well above the standard minimums. Since your appetite is suppressed and you’re eating smaller portions overall, this means protein should take up a large share of whatever you do eat.

Practical ways to hit that target: start every meal with protein before moving on to other foods, keep high-protein snacks accessible (Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, deli turkey, hard-boiled eggs), and consider a protein shake on days when solid food feels unappealing. Many people on Wegovy find that their interest in food drops enough that they skip meals or graze lightly. If that’s you, a shake with 30 to 40 grams of protein can fill a significant gap without requiring much appetite.

Foods That Minimize Side Effects

Because digestion is slower, the goal is to eat things that are relatively easy on your stomach. Lean proteins (chicken breast, fish, eggs, tofu), non-starchy vegetables, whole grains in moderate portions, and fruits tend to be well tolerated. Cooking methods matter too. Baked, grilled, or steamed foods generally cause less trouble than anything fried or sautéed in heavy oil.

Fiber is important for overall health, with recommended intakes of 21 to 25 grams per day for women and 30 to 38 grams for men. But if you weren’t eating much fiber before starting Wegovy, increase it gradually. A sudden jump in fiber intake on top of already-slowed digestion can worsen bloating and gas. Add one serving at a time and give your body a few days to adjust before adding more.

Foods to Limit or Avoid

Greasy, fried, and high-fat foods are the most common triggers for nausea and heartburn on Wegovy. Because your stomach empties more slowly, a fatty meal that would have been fine before can now feel like a brick sitting in your chest for hours. Fast food, heavy cream sauces, deep-fried anything, and rich desserts are frequent offenders.

Sugary foods and drinks can also cause problems. Large amounts of sugar consumed quickly may trigger uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, cramping, sweating, dizziness, and lightheadedness, particularly one to three hours after eating, when your body releases a surge of insulin to handle the sugar load. This doesn’t mean you can never have something sweet, but concentrated sugar on an empty stomach or in large quantities is worth avoiding.

Spicy foods bother some people more on Wegovy than they did before, largely because slower digestion means the stomach lining is exposed to irritants for longer. If you notice heartburn worsening after spicy meals, dial it back.

How to Structure Your Meals

Smaller, more frequent meals work better than two or three large ones. When your stomach empties slowly, a large meal can leave you uncomfortably full for hours. Many people on Wegovy find that four to six small meals or snacks spread throughout the day feel more manageable. Eating slowly and stopping at the first signal of fullness (not the first signal of being “done” with your plate) also helps reduce nausea.

A useful plate framework: fill half with vegetables or a small portion of fruit, a quarter with lean protein, and a quarter with a complex carbohydrate like brown rice, sweet potato, or whole-grain bread. This isn’t a strict rule, but it naturally keeps meals balanced and protein-forward without requiring calorie counting. On days when your appetite is very low, focus on the protein portion first and eat the rest if you can.

Drinks: Water, Caffeine, and Alcohol

Dehydration is a real concern on Wegovy, partly because you’re eating less (food accounts for a surprising amount of daily fluid intake) and partly because side effects like nausea and diarrhea can increase fluid loss. Women should aim for at least 9 cups of water daily and men at least 13 cups, and you may need more than that, especially if you’re experiencing GI side effects. Sipping water throughout the day rather than trying to drink large amounts at once is easier on your stomach.

Caffeine can worsen acid reflux and indigestion, both of which are already more common on Wegovy. You don’t necessarily need to eliminate coffee, but if you’re dealing with persistent heartburn, try cutting back or switching to a lower-acid option like cold brew. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach is especially likely to cause problems.

Alcohol interacts with Wegovy in a few ways. It can affect blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia, particularly if you drink on an empty stomach or after exercise. Many people also report feeling the effects of alcohol faster and more intensely while on semaglutide, likely because slower gastric emptying changes how alcohol is absorbed. If you drink, do so with food and in smaller quantities than you might be used to.

Watch for Nutrient Gaps

Eating significantly less food means you’re also taking in fewer vitamins and minerals overall. While no specific deficiency is universally linked to Wegovy, the drug’s effect on stomach acid production could theoretically reduce absorption of vitamin B12 over time. People who already have risk factors for B12 deficiency (vegetarians, older adults, those with digestive conditions) should be particularly attentive.

A daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net for anyone eating considerably less than they were before. Beyond that, focus on nutrient-dense foods rather than empty calories. When your total food volume is low, every meal matters more. A 300-calorie meal of grilled salmon and roasted vegetables delivers far more nutritional value than 300 calories of crackers and cheese, even though both might feel equally filling on a suppressed appetite.

Adjusting Over Time

The first few weeks on Wegovy, and each time your dose increases, tend to be the roughest for side effects. Many people find they need to eat very conservatively during these periods: bland foods, tiny portions, lots of water. As your body adjusts, you can gradually reintroduce more variety. Foods that made you nauseous at a lower dose may be fine once you’ve been stable on a dose for a few weeks.

Keep a loose mental note of which foods cause problems and which feel good. Everyone’s tolerance is slightly different. Some people handle dairy fine but can’t touch red meat; others tolerate moderate fat but react badly to sugar. Your own pattern will emerge within the first month or two, and that personal data is more useful than any generic food list.
