Step-by-Step Procedure for Measurement
The process begins with carefully measuring the required volumes or masses of the reactants, typically solutions, that will be mixed. The first solution is poured into the assembled calorimeter, and its temperature is allowed to stabilize for several minutes. This initial, stable temperature, \(T_{initial}\), is recorded with high precision.
In a separate container, the second reactant is also measured, and its temperature is confirmed to be the same as the first solution, or its temperature is also recorded. To start the reaction, the second reactant is quickly and completely poured into the calorimeter cup containing the first solution. The lid is immediately placed back on the cup, and the stirring device is used to mix the contents continuously and gently.
The thermometer is monitored constantly, and a series of temperature readings are recorded at regular, short time intervals, such as every 15 to 30 seconds. The temperature will rise or fall as the reaction proceeds, and the readings are continued until the temperature either reaches a maximum or minimum value and then begins to drift back toward the initial temperature. The term \(\Delta T\) (read as “delta T”) represents the change in temperature, which is calculated by subtracting the initial temperature from the final temperature: \(\Delta T = T_{final} – T_{initial}\). A positive \(\Delta T\) indicates a temperature increase, meaning the reaction released heat (exothermic), while a negative \(\Delta T\) indicates a temperature decrease, meaning the reaction absorbed heat (endothermic).
