How to Do a ZYN: Steps, Timing, and What to Expect

Using a Zyn pouch is straightforward: you place it between your upper lip and gum, leave it there for up to 30 minutes, then dispose of it. There’s no smoke, no vapor, and no spitting involved. Here’s everything you need to know to use one properly.

Placing the Pouch

Open the can and grab a single pouch. Tuck it between your upper lip and gum, pressing it gently into place with your tongue or finger. Most people park it off to one side rather than dead center. The upper lip is the preferred spot because it produces less saliva than the lower lip, which means the pouch stays put more easily while you talk or eat. You can use the lower lip if you prefer, but avoid placing a pouch under your tongue.

Stick to one pouch at a time. If the flavor starts to fade or you want a slightly different sensation, you can use your tongue to shift the pouch to the other side of your mouth.

What You’ll Feel

Within the first minute or two, you’ll notice a tingling or slight burning sensation where the pouch touches your gum. This is normal. The nicotine in Zyn is in a salt form, and the pouch contains pH-adjusting ingredients (essentially baking soda) that help the nicotine pass through the lining of your mouth and into your bloodstream. That chemical process is what causes the tingle. It fades after a few minutes as you get used to it.

The 3 mg strength delivers a mild to moderate buzz, comparable to about half a cigarette to one cigarette. The 6 mg strength is noticeably stronger, closer to one to two cigarettes. If you’ve never used nicotine before or you’re trying Zyn for the first time, starting with 3 mg will help you gauge your tolerance. The 6 mg version is more likely to cause dizziness or nausea in new users.

How Long to Keep It In

Zyn recommends using a pouch for up to 30 minutes. Most of the nicotine and flavor are fully released within 30 to 45 minutes. The 6 mg pouch tends to last a bit longer, with effects stretching closer to 45 to 60 minutes. Once the flavor is gone and the tingling has stopped, the pouch is spent and should be removed.

You don’t need to chew the pouch or move it around constantly. Just let it sit. Your mouth’s moisture does the work of drawing out the nicotine gradually.

Swallowing Saliva

You’ll naturally produce some extra saliva while using a Zyn pouch. Swallowing it is generally fine for most people, but swallowing a lot of nicotine-laced saliva in a short period can cause nausea, dizziness, or vomiting. If you’re sensitive to this, you can spit into a cup or bottle instead.

Drinking water afterward helps flush your system if you feel any queasiness. Mild nausea usually passes on its own, but symptoms like confusion, difficulty breathing, or persistent vomiting are signs of nicotine poisoning and need medical attention.

Removing and Disposing of the Pouch

When you’re done, pull the pouch out of your mouth. The Zyn can has a small waste compartment built into the top of the lid. Peel back the seal on the lid and tuck the used pouch inside. This lets you carry used pouches discreetly until you find a trash can. Don’t flush pouches or toss them on the ground.

Protecting Your Gums

Holding a pouch against the same spot on your gums repeatedly can cause irritation, and over time, this mechanical pressure may contribute to gum recession. Alternating the side of your mouth where you place each pouch helps distribute the contact and reduces the chance of soreness in one area. If you notice persistent tenderness, redness, or your gums pulling back from your teeth, take a break from that spot or reduce your usage.

The lower nicotine strength (3 mg) also tends to cause less mouth irritation than the 6 mg version.

Storing Your Pouches

Keep your Zyn can at room temperature, ideally between about 60 and 77°F. A drawer, cupboard, or shelf away from heat works well. Avoid leaving cans in your car on warm days, near windows with direct sunlight, or in humid spots like bathrooms. You don’t need to refrigerate or freeze them. Cold temperatures can actually damage the pouches.

After opening the can, press the lid firmly shut each time to keep the remaining pouches fresh. Every can has a “best before” date printed on the bottom, so check that if you’ve had one sitting around for a while.

Strength and Flavor Differences

Zyn comes in two nicotine strengths in the U.S.: 3 mg and 6 mg per pouch. Beyond the buzz, the strength you choose affects the flavor experience. The 3 mg pouches let the flavor come through more clearly because the nicotine sensation is milder. With 6 mg, the stronger nicotine hit tends to overshadow the flavor. If taste matters to you, the lower strength often delivers a better experience on that front.

Age Restrictions

You must be at least 21 years old to buy Zyn or any other nicotine product in the United States. This federal law, known as Tobacco 21, has been in effect since December 2019 and covers all tobacco and nicotine products with no exceptions. Retailers are required to check photo ID for anyone who appears under 30.
