It uses an acrylic base, which mimics gum tissue, and artificial teeth. Consistent cleaning prevents the accumulation of oral bacteria and plaque on the acrylic surface. Neglecting this routine leads to staining, foul odors, and irritation of surrounding gum tissues.
Daily Cleaning Routine
Immediately after removing the flipper, especially following meals, thoroughly rinse it under running water to dislodge loose food particles. Always handle the appliance over a folded towel or a basin filled with water; this prevents the acrylic from cracking if it slips. Scrubbing should be performed using a soft-bristled toothbrush or a specialized denture brush designed to reach all surfaces.
The cleaning agent should be a mild, non-abrasive substance, such as gentle hand soap or a denture-specific paste. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as its abrasive particles are intended for natural enamel and will scratch the softer acrylic material. These scratches allow bacteria to colonize, making the flipper harder to sanitize and causing it to lose its polished finish. Gently scrub all surfaces, including the side that rests against the palate or gums, to ensure all residue is removed.
Long-Term Care and Avoidable Mistakes
The flipper requires periodic deep cleaning, achieved by soaking it once a day or overnight. Specialized effervescent denture cleaning tablets release active ingredients that chemically break down bacterial biofilms and stains without harming the acrylic base. Soaking helps sanitize the flipper, mitigating the risk of fungal overgrowth like candidiasis.
When the flipper is not worn, it must be stored in a moist environment because acrylic is porous and can dry out. Allowing the appliance to air-dry can cause the acrylic to become brittle or warp its shape, compromising the fit. Store the flipper in a dedicated case filled with plain water or the recommended soaking solution to maintain its structural integrity.
Avoid exposing the appliance to very hot water or excessive heat. Acrylic resin is thermoplastic, meaning high temperatures can irreversibly distort the material, rendering the flipper unusable. Harsh household chemicals, including bleach or strong alcohol-based mouthwashes, must never be used for cleaning. Bleach can weaken the acrylic structure over time and may cause discoloration of the gum-colored base.
