How to Care for a Ruby Necklace Plant

The Ruby Necklace Plant, scientifically known as Othonna capensis, is a distinctive trailing succulent prized for its vibrant coloration. Its common name is derived from the bead-like, elongated leaves that develop a striking purple-red hue when exposed to sufficient sunlight. This beautiful South African native is an excellent choice for hanging baskets, where its delicate, cascading strands create a jewel-toned display. Understanding its specific needs as a trailing succulent is the first step toward successful long-term growth and maintenance.

Optimizing Light and Temperature Conditions

The intensity of light directly influences the Othonna capensis’s signature color transformation. To achieve the deep, ruby-red stems and leaves, the plant requires several hours of bright, non-scorching sun daily. In lower light conditions, the foliage will revert to a more subdued green. Indoors, positioning the plant near a south or west-facing window, where it receives bright, indirect light, is ideal.

While the plant loves bright light, direct, intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. A spot that offers morning sun and bright afternoon shade is the best compromise for preventing damage while encouraging deep color. The Ruby Necklace Plant prefers warm, average room temperatures, thriving best between 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (15–30°C). It is not tolerant of frost and must be protected from temperatures falling below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Watering and Soil Requirements

Correct watering technique is the most important factor in preventing root rot. The Ruby Necklace Plant stores water in its fleshy leaves and stems, requiring an infrequent but thorough “soak and dry” method. Water deeply until it runs out of the drainage hole, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Check the soil by inserting a finger two inches deep; if it feels dry at that depth, it is time to water.

Watering frequency depends on the season, with more water needed during the spring and summer growing season. In cooler winter months, the plant may only need water once a month or less as growth slows. The soil must be highly porous to facilitate rapid drainage and prevent waterlogging. A commercial cactus or succulent mix works well, or use standard potting soil mixed with amendments like perlite or coarse sand.

Propagation and Routine Pruning

The Ruby Necklace Plant is easily propagated through stem cuttings. Use clean scissors or a knife to take a healthy stem section a few inches long with several nodes. Allow the cut end to dry out for one to two days until a protective callus forms over the wound. This callousing prevents the cutting from rotting when planted.

Once calloused, the cutting can be placed directly onto or lightly inserted into well-draining succulent soil. New roots will develop from the nodes in contact with the soil over a few weeks. Routine pruning provides material for propagation and helps maintain the plant’s aesthetic appeal. Trimming back long, sparse strands encourages the remaining stems to branch out, resulting in a denser, bushier appearance.

Addressing Pests and Care Mistakes

The Ruby Necklace Plant can occasionally be targeted by common houseplant pests, primarily sap-sucking insects like mealybugs and scale. Inspecting the stems and under the leaves regularly helps catch these pests early. For minor issues, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to directly treat and remove mealybugs. Widespread infestations can be treated with an application of insecticidal soap or neem oil, following product instructions.

Visual signs often signal a care mistake, guiding necessary adjustments. Shriveled, wrinkled leaves indicate underwatering, meaning the plant is drawing on its stored moisture reserves. Conversely, mushy, yellowing, or translucent leaves and stems are a classic symptom of overwatering and beginning rot. If the foliage is predominantly green and the vibrant ruby color is absent, the plant needs to be moved to a location with more intense light.
