Begin by removing the “three D’s”: dead, diseased, or damaged wood. Next, eliminate inward-growing branches, suckers emerging from the base, and water sprouts, which are vigorous, vertical shoots.
Make your cuts with sharp, clean tools. Use thinning cuts to remove entire branches back to the main trunk or a larger branch, and heading cuts to shorten the length of a branch. Cuts should be made just above an outward-facing bud to direct future growth away from the center of the tree.

Prevention relies on sanitation and cultural controls. Clear all fallen fruit promptly to eliminate sites where the larvae can pupate and overwinter.
Home growers can use pheromone traps to monitor adult moth populations and time treatments accurately. Another method involves wrapping the trunk with a band of corrugated cardboard to capture larvae seeking a place to pupate; this band should be removed and destroyed after a few weeks. Maintaining a clean orchard floor and actively removing infested fruit are the most effective non-chemical strategies.
