Native to tropical and subtropical regions, these shrubs are often considered temperamental, but their specific requirements are predictable and manageable. Establishing the Ideal Environment

Gardenias flourish in an environment that mimics their native, warm, and humid habitat. Maintaining the correct temperature is significant, as gardenias are sensitive to fluctuations. Day temperatures should remain between 65°F and 70°F, with night temperatures dropping slightly to a range of 60°F to 65°F. Allowing the temperature to climb too high, particularly at night, can cause the plant to drop its unopened flower buds.

A high level of atmospheric moisture, around 60% humidity, is necessary for the gardenia to thrive and bloom. In dry climates or indoor settings, humidity can be supplied by placing the container on a shallow tray filled with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot is not sitting directly in the water.
