These devices operate on the principle of thermal isolation, attempting to contain all the heat produced or consumed within a controlled environment, typically water. This process requires precise measurements of mass and temperature. First, a measured mass of cold water is placed into the calorimeter, allowed to equilibrate with the hardware, and its initial temperature, \(T_{cold}\), is recorded.
Separately, a known mass of hot water is prepared, and its initial temperature, \(T_{hot}\), is measured just before mixing. This temperature should be significantly higher (often 40 to 50 degrees Celsius) to ensure measurable heat transfer. The hot water is quickly poured into the cold water, and the lid is immediately secured to minimize heat loss.
The mixture is stirred to ensure rapid and uniform thermal equilibrium. The temperature is monitored continuously until a stable final equilibrium temperature, \(T_{final}\), is reached and recorded. This experiment provides the necessary data to calculate the heat absorbed by the apparatus.
This setup works because the heat lost by the hot water is transferred directly to two components: the cold water and the calorimeter itself. Since the specific heat capacity of water is a known standard value, the only unknown variable in the energy balance equation is \(C_{cal}\).

To isolate \(C_{cal}\), the equation is algebraically rearranged. The heat gained by the cold water is subtracted from the heat lost by the hot water, yielding the heat absorbed exclusively by the calorimeter. Applying the Calculation Steps
The derived formula is applied using specific data collected during the calibration experiment. For example, consider a test where 50.0 grams of cold water (\(22.0^\circ\text{C}\)) is mixed with 50.0 grams of hot water (\(45.0^\circ\text{C}\)). The final equilibrium temperature is \(32.5^\circ\text{C}\).
The first calculation determines the heat lost by the hot water. The temperature change, \(\Delta T_{hot}\), is \(32.5^\circ\text{C} – 45.0^\circ\text{C}\), or \(-12.5^\circ\text{C}\).
