How to Become an MRI Tech: Education and Salary

Becoming an MRI technologist typically takes two to four years, depending on whether you pursue a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree. The path involves completing an accredited educational program, passing a national certification exam, and in most states, obtaining a license. Choose an Educational Program

Your first decision is what type of program to enroll in. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredits MRI programs at several levels: certificate, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, and even post-baccalaureate certificate and master’s degree options. Most people enter through either a two-year associate program or a four-year bachelor’s program with coursework in anatomy, physiology, physics, and medical sciences.

There are two common routes into MRI specifically. The first is enrolling directly in an MRI-focused program from the start. The second is completing a radiologic technology (X-ray) program first, then adding MRI training through a shorter certificate or bridge program. Both lead to the same certification, but the second route gives you broader credentials and more flexibility in the job market.

When evaluating programs, make sure they’re accredited. ARRT-approved programs are required if you plan to sit for the national certification exam, which most employers expect. Unaccredited programs can leave you unable to get certified, regardless of how much training you completed.

What You’ll Learn in Training

MRI programs combine classroom instruction with extensive hands-on clinical rotations. In the classroom, you’ll study cross-sectional anatomy (the body as seen in “slices” from different angles), MRI physics, image quality, and patient safety protocols specific to strong magnetic fields. The physics component trips up some students, but it’s essential for understanding why images look the way they do and how to adjust scan settings for different body parts.

Clinical rotations are where you’ll spend most of your time learning to actually operate MRI scanners under supervision. You’ll work through a broad competency checklist covering nearly every region of the body: brain scans (routine, contrast-enhanced, and specialized protocols for conditions like multiple sclerosis or seizures), spinal imaging, cardiac and vascular studies, abdominal organs, and musculoskeletal exams for joints like the shoulder, knee, and wrist. You’ll also learn to image pelvic structures, perform MR angiography, and handle quality control tasks like phantom scanning and coil checks.

Beyond scanning, you’ll need to demonstrate competency in practical clinical skills: screening patients for metal implants and other contraindications (anything that makes an MRI unsafe), starting IV lines for contrast injections, managing claustrophobic patients, processing and archiving images, and maintaining sterile technique when needed. A supervisor signs off on each competency before you’re considered proficient.

Certification: ARRT and ARMRIT

The most widely recognized credential is the MRI certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). There are two ways to earn it.

The primary pathway is for people who complete an ARRT-approved MRI educational program and earn at least an associate degree. After finishing your program and meeting an ethics review, you sit for the ARRT MRI certification exam. This is the route most new graduates take.

The postprimary pathway is designed for people who already hold an ARRT credential in another discipline, like radiography. If you’re a working X-ray tech who wants to add MRI, you can qualify through a combination of additional coursework and clinical experience without completing a full second degree program.

There’s also an alternative certifying body called ARMRIT (American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists). ARMRIT certification requires 6,240 hours of eligible experience and passing a written exam, which can be taken online or in person. This pathway appeals to some technologists who entered the field through on-the-job training rather than a formal program. ARMRIT certification renews every three years with continuing education. Not all employers accept ARMRIT in place of ARRT, so check what’s preferred in your area before choosing this route.

State Licensing Requirements

More than 75% of states have licensing laws that cover radiologic technology, and MRI often falls under that umbrella. In these states, you need a state license before you can work, even if you already hold national certification. Some states require ARRT certification as a prerequisite for licensure, while others administer their own exams or have separate criteria. A handful of states have no licensing requirement at all.

The specifics vary enough that you’ll need to check with your state’s regulatory agency directly. Don’t assume that passing the ARRT exam automatically qualifies you to practice everywhere. If you’re considering relocating, research the licensing rules in your target state early so you aren’t caught off guard.

Skills That Matter on the Job

Technical knowledge gets you certified, but a few less obvious skills determine how well you’ll do day to day. MRI safety is paramount because the magnetic field is always on. You need a thorough, almost reflexive approach to screening every person who enters the scan room for ferromagnetic objects, implants, and other hazards. A missed screening question can be life-threatening.

Attention to detail matters more in MRI than in many other imaging modalities. Slight differences in how you position a patient or set scan parameters can mean the difference between a diagnostic image and one that needs to be repeated, adding time and frustration for everyone. You’ll also need strong communication skills. Many patients are anxious, claustrophobic, or in pain, and your ability to explain the procedure calmly and keep them still for 30 to 60 minutes directly affects image quality.

Job growth looks solid. Employment of MRI technologists is projected to increase 7% from 2024 to 2034, faster than average. An aging population needing more diagnostic imaging, combined with MRI’s expanding role in diagnosing conditions without radiation exposure, drives that demand. Hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, and specialty clinics all hire MRI techs, and evening or weekend shifts are common since many facilities operate extended hours.

Keeping Your Credentials Current

Once you’re certified through ARRT, you’ll need to earn 24 approved continuing education credits every two years to maintain your registration, regardless of how many ARRT credentials you hold. These credits can come from conferences, online courses, journal articles, or employer-sponsored training. ARRT also has a Continuing Qualifications Requirements program that periodically verifies you’re staying current with evolving standards in your discipline. Missing your CE deadline can result in losing your registration, so most techs build continuing education into their routine rather than scrambling at the end of each cycle.
