The most significant threat is the use of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides. These products do not discriminate between harmful pests and beneficial predators, killing ladybugs, their eggs, and their larvae. Systemic pesticides are particularly damaging because the chemical is absorbed by the plant and remains toxic to any insect that feeds on the plant or its sap for an extended period.
A preference for a perfectly manicured space can inadvertently remove the ladybugs’ protective infrastructure. Excessively cleaning up dead leaves, spent plant material, and weeds eliminates the vital overwintering and resting sites they require. Maintaining a slightly wilder, less manicured section of the garden ensures that essential habitat for their survival remains intact.
Furthermore, aggressive physical interventions, such as using a powerful blast of water from a hose to dislodge pest insects, risk damaging ladybug eggs and newly hatched larvae.
