This results in a compact, self-limiting plant that tends to ripen its entire crop within a short, concentrated period of one to two weeks.
Indeterminate tomatoes are vining plants that continue to grow, flower, and set fruit continuously until the first frost. These varieties produce a steady, season-long harvest and can reach significant vertical lengths. Knowing the growth habit is the necessary first step before selecting or constructing a supportive structure.
Required Cage Height for Determinate Tomatoes
Determinate tomato plants typically grow to a height of three to four feet, simplifying their support requirements. For these varieties, a standard store-bought cage, usually three to four feet tall, is sufficient.
The primary function of the cage is to contain the plant’s bushy form and support the heavy, concentrated fruit load. The cage must also be wide enough to allow for good air circulation, especially since the fruit ripens all at once. A cage diameter of 14 to 18 inches generally provides enough space for the plant to spread without becoming overly crowded.

Indeterminate tomatoes require substantially taller and more robust support due to their continuous vining growth habit.
