Giant Sequoias are known for their massive trunks and volume, making them the largest trees by mass. However, they are generally shorter, typically reaching up to 300 feet (91 meters). The height of Coast Redwoods stems from a combination of biological traits and specific environmental conditions. Their genetic makeup contributes to a rapid growth rate and longevity, enabling them to accumulate height over centuries. Their efficient water transport system is important. Water travels from the roots to the highest leaves through a network of specialized tissues called xylem, driven by transpiration from the leaves. The coastal habitat, characterized by consistent fog, plays a role. This fog provides a direct moisture source, absorbed through their leaves, reducing water stress during drier periods and allowing stomata to remain open for photosynthesis. Rich, well-drained soils and abundant rainfall in their native Northern California range supply the necessary nutrients for sustained growth.

The Art of Measuring Giants

Measuring the height of these trees presents challenges, requiring specialized techniques. One direct method involves a climber ascending the tree and dropping a tape measure from the highest point to the ground. This provides accurate measurement but is labor-intensive and requires expertise.
