The left ventricle has thick, muscular walls that generate systemic blood pressure nearly double that of most large mammals, which is necessary to overcome gravity and perfuse the brain.

When the giraffe lowers its head to drink, a complex network of vessels at the brain’s base, called the rete mirabile or “wonderful net,” helps regulate blood flow. This prevents a dangerous surge of blood to the brain. The tight, dense skin and fascia around the legs act like natural compression stockings, which prevents blood from pooling in the lower limbs. Arteries in the lower legs also have thick walls to manage this high internal pressure.

Ecological Advantages of Being Tall

The giraffe’s extreme height provides distinct advantages in its savanna habitat, fundamentally shaping its ecological niche. The primary benefit is access to food resources unavailable to other herbivores, a strategy known as niche partitioning. Their height allows them to browse on the leaves, flowers, and seed pods of tall trees, particularly various species of acacia.

This high-reaching diet reduces competition with medium-sized browsers like kudu and impala, which feed at lower levels. The ability to scan the horizon from such an elevation is also a powerful anti-predator adaptation. Giraffes can spot approaching predators, such as lions, from a greater distance, providing more reaction time for the herd to move away.

Height also plays a role in the social structure and breeding behavior of males. Adult bulls use their long, powerful necks in a ritualized combat known as “necking” to establish dominance. The taller, heavier male typically prevails in these contests, gaining greater access to reproductive females. A bull’s immense height is an advantage not only for survival and feeding but also for reproductive success.
