Among all hyena species, the spotted hyena is recognized for having the most powerful bite.

Anatomy of a Bone-Crushing Jaw

The hyena’s ability to exert such force stems from specific biological adaptations within its jaw and skull. Their robust skull structure includes a pronounced sagittal crest, a ridge on top of the head that serves as a large attachment point for powerful jaw muscles. The masseter and temporalis muscles are exceptionally developed and robust in hyenas, generating the immense pressure needed for their bite. These muscles work in conjunction with a wide gape, allowing for a broad and powerful bite.

Beyond muscle and skull architecture, hyenas also possess specialized dentition. Their teeth include conical premolars with broad bases and sharp, pointed edges, which are particularly effective for crushing bones. Additionally, their molars are designed for grinding, while sharp canines and carnassials facilitate tearing through tough tissues. This comprehensive dental arrangement ensures that hyenas can process nearly every part of a carcass.

Ecological Role of Their Powerful Bite

Hyenas utilize their powerful bite strength to access nutrients. Their ability to crush bones allows them to reach the nutrient-rich marrow inside, maximizing the caloric intake from a carcass. This bone-crushing capability means hyenas can consume nearly an entire animal, including skin and sometimes hooves. This behavior positions them as important ecological recyclers, cleaning up carcasses and preventing the spread of disease.

While often stereotyped as scavengers, spotted hyenas are also skilled hunters, bringing down medium to large ungulates. Despite its impressive strength, the hyena’s bite is not the strongest in the animal kingdom. For instance, the hippopotamus has a bite force of around 1,800 PSI, and a gorilla can exert 1,300 PSI. A polar bear’s bite measures approximately 1,200 PSI. Crocodilians, such as the saltwater crocodile (3,700-4,000 PSI) and the Nile crocodile (5,000 PSI), possess significantly more powerful bites than hyenas.
