They can maintain high-speed chases for extended periods, wearing down prey over long distances. Their cardiovascular system is also noteworthy, with hearts that are proportionally larger than those of other similarly sized mammals, aiding in their sustained physical exertion. A defining characteristic of the spotted hyena is its bite force, which is among the strongest in the animal kingdom. This force is a result of their robust skull architecture, featuring strong jaw muscles anchored to a prominent bony ridge on top of their skull.

Their dental adaptations further enhance this power. Hyenas possess specialized teeth, particularly their conical premolars, which are designed for crushing and pulverizing bones. These teeth, along with their carnassials, allow them to efficiently slice through flesh and break down tough skeletal material, enabling them to access nutrient-rich bone marrow that other predators cannot. This ability ensures they can utilize nearly every part of a carcass, leaving very little to waste.

Demonstrations of Strength in the Wild

Hyenas apply their strength in various ways within their ecosystem, functioning as both skilled hunters and efficient scavengers. Contrary to popular belief, spotted hyenas primarily obtain their food through hunting, with studies indicating that hunting accounts for 70-95% of their diet. They employ coordinated pack hunting strategies, utilizing their collective strength and intelligence to pursue and take down large prey.

These animals are capable of hunting prey such as wildebeest, zebra, and even buffalo, which requires teamwork and endurance to exhaust the targeted animal. Once prey is secured, their jaws and bone-crushing capabilities allow them to rapidly dismantle and consume the carcass, often consuming an entire animal, including bones, in a short period. While tigers generally have a slightly stronger bite force than lions, at approximately 1,050 PSI, the hyena’s bite remains superior or comparable for its size. Wolves, another pack-hunting carnivore, exhibit a bite force around 1,000 PSI, similar to that of a hyena, but hyenas possess more specialized teeth for bone crushing.
