Most of the world’s known tungsten reserves are heavily concentrated in a few regions, with China dominating both the reserves and global production. This high concentration creates significant geopolitical risk in the supply chain for consuming nations.
The Process of Extraction and Refinement
Extracting pure tungsten from its mineral ores is a complex, energy-intensive metallurgical challenge. The process begins with crushing the ore and using gravity, flotation, and magnetic separation to concentrate the tungsten minerals. The resulting concentrate then undergoes a series of chemical treatments to separate the tungsten from other elements like iron, manganese, and calcium.
This chemical processing typically involves dissolving the ore in an alkaline solution, such as sodium hydroxide, or a strong acid, depending on the mineral type. The resulting tungsten-bearing compound, often ammonium paratungstate, is then heated to produce tungsten oxide. The final step of refinement involves a high-temperature reduction process, where the tungsten oxide powder is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. This reduction removes the oxygen, yielding a pure tungsten metal powder, which is the starting material for most industrial products.
Essential Industrial Applications
The global demand for tungsten is driven by a unique set of physical properties that make it irreplaceable in numerous high-performance applications. Its extreme hardness and resistance to wear are the foundation for its most widespread use in cemented carbides. These composites, made by combining tungsten carbide powder with a binder metal like cobalt, are used to manufacture:

Tungsten’s unmatched melting point, the highest of all metals, makes it perfect for high-temperature environments. Furthermore, the element’s high density, comparable to gold and nearly twice that of lead, makes it invaluable in applications requiring significant mass in a small volume, such as counterweights in aerospace, vibration dampeners, and specialized radiation shielding.
